Liverpool have reportedly identified German midfielder Kai Havertz as their number one summer transfer target, according to Daniel Blackham of the Daily Express.
Liverpool Eyeing Summer Move For Kai Havertz
Top Target
The 20-year-old is regarded as one of the best young talents in Europe, having become a key player for Bayer Leverkusen.
Last season saw Havertz record his best season as a professional to date, as he scored 20 goals in all competitions.
However, he has struggled with the added expectation so far this season. Havertz has scored just five times, as Leverkusen currently sit fifth in the Bundesliga.
His form has not put off Liverpool from wanting to sign him, however. Jurgen Klopp is looking to keep his squad fresh and maintain the high standards that have been set so far this season.
The Reds are currently well clear of second-placed Manchester City in the Premier League and look on course to seal their long-awaited Premier League title. Klopp’s side are currently 22 points ahead of City, and travel to Norwich City in their next game.
Beginning of Squad Transformation?
The thought of a squad transformation is well down the line, but it something that Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool are slowly looking to enforce.
With a current average age of 27.9, that will only begin to creep up as players get older. Several key players are now edging towards 30-years-old and heading out of their prime years. Jordan Henderson is 29, as is Geroginio Wijnaldum. Virgil van Dijk and Roberto Firmino are both 28, while Sadio Mane and Mo Salah are both to 27.
As a result, while having assembled the seemingly-perfect squad currently, Jurgen Klopp will be keen to ensure that Liverpool are still at the top of the Premier League come the end of his reign, meaning a squad rejuvenation is inevitable.
