Sander Berge Signs £22 Million Deal to Bring European Football to Sheffield United

Sander Berge

It’s not very often that Sheffield United are linked with operating one of the biggest deals in history, yet with the signing of Sander Berge last week, he became the team’s most expensive player. The Norwegian midfielder came from Belgian team Genk and signed a four-and-a-half-year deal, which cost the Blades about £22 million. In his 98 appearances for Genk this season, he scored six goals and provided much-needed support and gameplay to assist his team to various victories.

Sander Berge Aiming to Bring European Football to Sheffield United

Berge made his debut for Sheffield United last weekend, appearing on the field to assist with their 1-0 win against Crystal Palace. This saw the team move up to fifth position in the Premier League table, with only a single point separating them and Tottenham in fifth place. As Sunday, February 9 approaches, Berge will be preparing himself to take to the field again, as this time the Blades host AFC Bournemouth.

Berge has revealed that his aim is to get United into the European competition though, which is something the Sheffield team has never had the opportunity to do before. Speaking of United’s victory over Palace, Berge said that it was great to win and go fifth in his first game. “But we cannot stop there. We must push forward”, he said, firmly setting his goals on playing in Europe next season.

Berge Cites Wilder as Influence on Joining Blades

Chris Wilder, who joined Sheffield United as their new manager on a three-year contract in 2016 and has since signed another three-year deal, is cited as being the main reason for Berge deciding to join the Blades.

“I had followed the team closely for a long period”, said Berge on United. “I had seen how Sheffield United had developed over there months. I watched how they play and thought this would suit me. With Chris the manager and the way he spoke to me about my role, that helped my decision. It is a very humble, down-to-earth club and all of those things suit me.”

The likelihood is that when Sheffield United play again on Sunday, sports bets will bet taking place at a variety of online bookmakers. Betwinner is one such site, which takes bets on numerous different sporting events. With regard to the upcoming match, United are expecting striker David McGoldrick to be in good enough condition to participate. He missed the team’s last four games due to a nagging foot complaint, but it is thought he will be on the pitch when Sunday arrives. That game is set to air live on BT Sport and is followed up by the team’s winter break. Time will tell whether Berge is worth his £22 million fee.
