The Deal
Wolves announced via their website they had signed the teenager. Matheson arrives for a fee in the region £1 million. He will sign with the Premier League side before returning to Rochdale on loan for the remainder of the season.
Matheson has enjoyed a breakthrough season with Rochdale which included scoring an equalising goal for Rochdale against Manchester United in the League Cup. He is an athletic, talented full-back who is only going to get better.
Rochdale will be pleased to keep him until the end of the season but that is big money for the League One club. Matheson is thriving under Brian Barry-Murphy and his move highlights the good players Rochdale are producing.
Matheson will focus on Rochdale for the rest of the season, with Dale hovering above the bottom three in League One. The defender will attempt to help them survive before returning to Wolves and competing with Matt Doherty.
Wolves Continue to Sign Young Players
Wolves’ transfer business always focuses on the first team and the development squads. They regularly add to their development squad as they look to make young players ready for the first team.
Matheson is the latest player to join their development squad. He will remain at Rochdale on loan but will join up in the summer-ready to test himself at Premier League level.
Wolves were looking to boost their academy and they have actively looked to improve their younger squads. Luke Matheson and Enzo Loiodice have arrived as their main development players.
