Charlton Athletic have signed midfielder Matt Smith on loan from Manchester City for the rest of the season.
Charlton Athletic Sign Midfielder Matt Smith
The Deal
Charlton announced via their website they had signed the midfielder. Smith arrives on loan for the remainder of the season and becomes the Addicks’ second signing of the day.
Smith is a highly talented Welsh international midfielder. He arrives on loan from Manchester City. He is a product of the City set up and joins Charlton hoping for more game time. The midfielder spent the first half of the season at Queens Park Rangers but struggled to make an impact.
He joins Charlton hoping to help them stay up in the Championship and get some game time ahead of the Euros. Smith will reunite with Welsh compatriots Jonny Williams and Tom Lockyer at The Valley.
He hasn’t signed in time for tomorrow’s game against Barnsley but will certainly play a part in the next few months. His debut could come against Stoke City in eight days time
What Was Said
Speaking to the Charlton website about his move, Smith said: “It’s a wonderful football club with a lot of history.
“I just can’t wait to get going. I’ve come here to try and get an opportunity to play and prove to everyone that I can do it at this level.
“I spoke to Locks [Tom Lockyer] and he just told me what an amazing football club it is and that the feel for the club is really nice which helped me make the decision to join this club.
Manager Lee Bowyer added: “I’m delighted to have a second midfielder through the door.
“I’m looking forward to working with him, he’s another young one that is going to give us plenty of energy in the middle of the park. It’s a good positive signing for me.”
