Aston Villa have made their fourth January signing. The Villains have signed striker Borja Baston on a free transfer from Swansea City.
Aston Villa Sign Striker Borja Baston
The Deal
Aston Villa announced via their website they had signed the striker. Baston arrives on a free transfer from Swansea signing a deal until the end of the season.
Baston will provide cover to strikers Mbwana Samatta and Keinan Davis as Villa add depth to their strike force. The Spanish striker scored just one Premier League goal for Swansea. He has since spent two seasons back in Spain and featured in the Championship this season.
Baston started this season well, scoring four goals in six games, but has dipped since and now found game time limited since the arrival of Rhian Brewster. Baston joins after Villa sporting director Jesus Garica Pitarch pushed a deal to bring him. Pitarch knows the striker from his days working at Spanish clubs.
The striker has netted six times for the Swans in 21 appearances this season. Once on the books at Atletico Madrid, the 27-year-old spent the majority of his time with Atleti out on loan, netting 23 goals for Real Zaragoza in 2014/15. His 18 goals for Eibar the following season prompted Swansea to part with over £15 million for his services in the summer of 2016. He spent last season on loan at Alaves, scoring five times in 18 starts.
Baston won’t feature against Bournemouth tomorrow. He could make his Villa debut against Tottenham Hotspur on the 16th of February.
A Good Window For Aston Villa
It’s been a busy window for Aston Villa. Four new faces have arrived bringing plenty of experience. Pepe Reina already looks an excellent signing while Danny Drinkwater and Mbwana Samatta have shown what they can offer.
Baston has struggled in England so far but he will hope a move to Villa can reignite his career.
