Championship promotion hunters Leeds United have signed RB Leipzig striker Jean-Kevin Augustin on loan for the rest of the season. The Frenchman arrives as Leeds’ third January signing.
Leeds Sign Jean-Kevin Augustin on Loan From RB Leipzig
The Deal
Leeds announced via their website they had signed the striker. Augustin arrives on loan for the remainder of the season tasked with firing Leeds to the Premier League.
The deal is an initial loan, but the clubs will discuss a permanent deal should his loan be successful.
The striker’s arrival is a major boost for Marcelo Bielsa after losing Eddie Nketiah. The Arsenal youngster cut short his spell due to a lack of game time much to Bielsa’s annoyance. Leeds have heavily relied on Patrick Bamford for goals but Bielsa will hope Augustin can take on some of the responsibility.
The Frenchman impressed during his first two seasons at RB Leipzig scoring 20 goals in 67 games. However, he fell down the pecking order when Julen Naglesmann arrived in the summer.
The Frenchman was loaned to AS Monaco but struggled to make an impact making just thirteen appearances. RB Leipzig took up the option to recall him due to his lack of playing time.
Bielsa has been desperate for a striker with goals in short supply for Leeds. Augustin certainly knows how to score goals and will get chances at Leeds. The striker is quick, but he is also versatile meaning Bielsa could use him on the wings.
The 22-year-old also brings plenty of experience including appearances in the Champions League and Europa League. He is a goal scorer and certainly, Leeds need someone like him in their ranks. It’s a real coup for Leeds United.
The striker could make his debut at Elland Road tomorrow night when Leeds host promotion rivals Millwall.
