The Deal

Newcastle announced via their website they had signed the versatile Austrian. Lazaro arrives on an initial loan deal until the end of the season. He is looking for game time ahead of the Euros with every intention of returning to Inter next season.

Lazaro can play anywhere on the right-hand side whether that be right back or on the wing. He will play the right-wing back role with Steve Bruce preferring a 5-4-1 formation.

Lazaro arrives as Newcastle’s second January signing after Nabil Bentaleb joined from Schalke earlier this week. Steve Bruce has been targeting reinforcements following a string of injuries blighting his side.

The 23-year-old Austrian has slowly become a regular in the national side, making 28 appearances. He started his career at Red Bull Salzburg before joining Hertha Berlin, where he impressed.

However, a summer move to Inter Milan hasn’t worked just yet, with Lazaro struggling to impose himself on Antonio Conte. He arrives determined to play and catch the eye of his parent club.

He is eligible to make his debut in Newcastle’s FA Cup fourth-round tie against League One Oxford United.

What Was Said

Speaking to the Newcastle website about his move, Lazaro said: “I’m very happy to be here and can’t wait to meet all my teammates, get out on the training pitch and hopefully get a lot of victories in the future.

“I’ve only heard great things about the club. I’ve had good talks with the coach, so I feel very happy to be here now. Those conversations convinced me that this is the right place for me to come.

Steve Bruce added: “Valentino is a quality player who’ll add to us in attacking areas of the field, where we need to improve. He can play in a few positions, but he is a natural winger with an excellent delivery.

“We have worked hard to get him ahead of other clubs, so I’m delighted with what we’ve done. Along with Nabil Bentaleb, he’ll give us strong options.”
