Fleetwood Town Confirm The Signing Of Glenn Whelan
Wealth Of Experience
The 36-year-old will bring a wealth of experience to Joey Barton’s Fleetwood squad.
Whelan joins the club from Scottish Premiership side Hearts, making 15 appearances during the first half of this season.
He began his career with Bury FC, before enduring a four-year spell with Sheffield Wednesday.
The Irish international is best known for his time with Stoke City. Across a 10-year spell, Whelan made 291 appearances at the Bet365 Stadium.
During his first season with the Potters, he helped the Potters win promotion from the Championship to the Premier League. It is the top-flight where Stoke remained for the rest of Whelan’s spell with the club, before leaving in 2017.
Whelan then joined Aston Villa for a nominal fee in the summer of 2017. He made 68 appearances in a two-year spell at Villa Park, seeing play-off finishes in both seasons.
What Was Said
Speaking about his new signing to official Fleetwood website, manager Joey Barton said: “When the opportunity arose to bring someone of Glenn’s experience in to our squad, we moved quickly to get the deal done.
“Glenn is hungry to play and we’re sure that he will bring the qualities that everyone knows he is capable of into our group.
“We lost some experience in this window with Peter Clarke leaving to join Tranmere, so to bring someone in like Glenn who has been the captain of his country, is really important for our squad.
“This is an exciting signing for the club, and we look forward to seeing him in action.”
Fleetwood are currently 11th in League One on 37 points, and travel to 13th placed Bristol Rovers on Saturday 25 January.
