Oxford United travel to Gillingham this weekend in League One and it could be a must-win game. Not only are the U’s winless in three following defeats against Doncaster Rovers and Rotherham United, which was followed up with a goalless draw against Ipswich Town on Tuesday night, but Karl Robinson’s side are in FA Cup action the following weekend with most of their promotion rivals looking to pick up points during the U’s’ absence.
Oxford United Take on Gillingham in Must-Win Game
Oxford Winless in three
On New Year’s Day, Oxford put in a lacklustre performance and suffered defeat at the hands of Doncaster Rovers. The following weekend, three first-half goals from Rotherham put the game to bed despite a better second-half performance, but back to back defeats were the outcome.
Tuesday night’s draw would have probably been a decent point before New Year, but one point from a possible nine has seen the U’s drop from second to fifth, and that’s only because other sides around them have also dropped points.
FA Cup Weekend
It’s fantastic that the club are on another exciting cup run. The U’s reached the Carabao Cup quarter-finals before defeat against holders Manchester City, and they now face another Premier League opponent in Newcastle United in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
However, the only other side in cup action next weekend are Coventry City and as they were due to play Wycombe Wanderers, the game has been postponed. That still leaves the other two sides above them – Rotherham United and Ipswich Town – in action, along with five sides below them that could move above Robinson’s side in the table, depending on this weekend’s result.
A win could give the U’s some breathing space ahead of their cup clash, but dropped points and a weekend of league action off could see them drop out of the playoff picture, for now.
