Liverpool maintained their perfect home record after a routine win over Sheffield United. They are getting closer to a first title in 30 years after maintaining their 13-point lead at the top. Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane got the goals as Jurgen Klopp’s team went unbeaten in a whole year in the Premier League.
Liverpool Unbeaten in a Year Thanks to Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane Goals
Injury List is Growing
Liverpool were at it from the kick-off and, despite the early Salah goal being fortuitous, the Reds dominated the game and thoroughly deserved their win. The early goal took the wind out of Sheffield United’s sails, with the Blades struggling to assert themselves at Anfield. Chris Wilder tore into his team after the game, but acknowledged the fact that Liverpool have simply been a different animal to any other side in the division this season.
Despite a hectic schedule in December, Liverpool looked as sharp as ever against a below-par Sheffield United. Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane caused problems all game for Sheffield United’s reliable back three. The visitors have Dean Henderson to thank for a string of fine saves as he kept the scoreline respectable. Klopp will be disappointed his team couldn’t score more but he will be delighted to win a 19th league game out of 20. A tremendous feat as the Reds continue to dominate the Premier League.
That victory meant Liverpool were guaranteed to go unbeaten for a calendar year in the Premier League; a perfect way to start 2020. However, the Sheffield United victory saw Liverpool’s injury list grow. Naby Keita pulled up in the warmup having initially been in the starting 11. It’s a blow for the Guinea international who was certainly playing some of his best football in a Liverpool shirt. Keita joins Fabinho, Joel Matip, Dejan Lovren, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Xhedran Shaqiri on the injury list.
37 and Counting…
Liverpool have put together some sensational form and the invincible run is very much a possibility for a team oozing quality and confidence. They breezed past Sheffield United to extend their unbeaten run to 37.
The Reds get a break from league action this weekend as the FA Cup gets underway for Premier League clubs. The Reds face rejuvenated rivals Everton in the first Merseyside derby of 2020. An exciting, tasty, fiery game expected as Carlo Ancelotti faces his first Merseyside Derby. Let’s hope it’s a good as the league meeting back in December.
