Liverpool will be looking to right the wrongs of 2005 as they look to secure their first-ever Club World Cup. Jurgen Klopp is determined to finish the year on a high and right what the 2005 squad did wrong.
Liverpool Seeking Redemption Fourteen Years On
The 2005 campaign ended in disappointment after Rafa Benitez’s Liverpool team were beaten by Brazilian club Sao Paulo. A disappointing end to what was a fantastic year. Fast forward fourteen years and Liverpool will be hoping its second time lucky as they aim to secure a first Club World Cup.
Again like 2005, Jurgen Klopp’s team face Brazilian opposition in Flamengo. They will have to be at their best following a dramatic win against Monterrey in the semi-finals. But Klopp will fancy his side can get the job done and right the wrongs of 2005. Fourteen years after their previous final, the club has changed and seemingly they have an even better squad than the one which performed the miracle in Istanbul. Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah are a dangerous front three. They also arguably have the most in-form full-backs in world football.
Jordan Henderson is very much the Steven Gerrard figure in the team. Although he will never have the same connection that Gerrard had with the fans, he is a terrific leader in the team. He embodies what Klopp wants from his team. The England midfielder will certainly spur his teammates on in a huge game for the Reds.
Liverpool Hoping to Make it Second Time Lucky
The loss in 2005 hurt Liverpool in final they were overwhelming favourites to win. Similarly, in 2019 they will be favourites once again as they target a first success in this tournament. Jurgen Klopp will be determined to end an amazing 2019 on a high and secure his second trophy as the Liverpool manager.
They will be hoping lightning doesn’t strike twice. As long as they perform like we know they can, Liverpool will certainly right the wrongs of 2005.
