Southend United Appoint Sol Campbell as Manager
Tough Job Lies Ahead for Sol Campbell At Southend United
A tough job lies ahead for Sol Campbell as he takes over at Roots Hall. Southend currently lie in 22nd in the League One table, eight points off of safety.
Furthermore, the Shrimpers have won just one of their opening 14 league games. That came four games ago, in a 1-0 win against MK Dons. However, they have not won since.
Nonetheless, the 45-year-old has already experienced a relegation battle in his managerial career. He took over Macclesfield Town when they were bottom of the Sky Bet League Two table last season, five points off of safety. However, he led them to safety with a final day draw against Cambridge United.
As a result, Campbell has already shown what it takes to manage in the Football League on a tight budget. His experience and knowledge of the game will prove valuable in his latest role with Southend.
Experienced Backroom Staff
The former Arsenal defender has collated an experienced backroom staff to help him with the task of survival.
He has appointed former team-mate Hermann Hreiðarsson as his assistant manager. The former central defender previously worked with Campbell as his assistant manager at Macclesfield.
Meanwhile, former Manchester United striker Andy Cole will also join Sol Campbell at Southend United. Cole will take up the position of forward and attack coach, a position where they have been lacking, having scored jut 15 goals in the league this season.
Former Arsenal staff member Andy Colbert will also take up the role of ‘Head of Technical Football Conditioning’ at Roots Hall.
