Sky Bet League Two side Leyton Orient have appointed Carl Fletcher as their new head coach.
Carl Fletcher Appointed Leyton Orient Head Coach
The former Plymouth Argyle boss moves to London with a deal until the end of the 2020/21 season at E10.
Fletcher joins the club as the permanent successor to Justin Edinburgh after the former Tottenham Hotspur player died aged 49 in June following a cardiac arrest.
Fletcher had been working as loan manager at Bournemouth prior to making his switch to the London side.
Spending his playing days at West Ham United and Crystal Palace, Fletcher knows the London realm well.
Speaking after the appointment, Orient director of football Martin Ling told the club website: “Everyone we spoke to said everything we wanted to hear. We spoke to Stephen Purches at Bournemouth, we had people speak to Eddie Howe and Charlie Daniels. We spoke to a couple of players who played under him at Plymouth as well as the people at board level at Bournemouth and they all said the same thing – they believe he’s going to make a top-class football manager.”
The appointment also confirms that Orient interim head coach Ross Embleton will return to his former role of assistant head coach.
Danny Webb and interim player-coach Jobi McAnuff will also be included in Fletcher’s backroom team.
Inexperienced Appointment
Fletcher appears a relatively inexperienced appointment for Leyton Orient.
The 39-year-old spent two years in charge of Plymouth Argyle before taking a role at Bournemouth.
During his time in Devon, Fletcher managed a win percentage of just 24.3% from his 70 matches in charge.
Before becoming the Cherries’ loan manager, Fletcher had a coaching role with their U23 side.
Boots To Fill
Analysis by Aaron Patel, writer for Last Word on Football.
It goes without saying that Carl Fletcher has huge boots to fill. In fact, he has a legacy.
Justin Edinburgh’s tragic passing in June remains in the agony of the everyone at Leyton Orient. His impact will never be forgotten as their return to the EFL was under his guidance.
Fletcher is now tasked with keeping the O’s in the EFL and stabilizing their position.
The Orient faithful can play their part by backing Fletcher as manager.
They’ve started off the season well considering it’s their first season back in the EFL.
However, Fletcher will need backing and support to get started in what can be considered to be a huge permanent first job for the ex-Plymouth Argyle player.
