Union Berlin have suffered back to back defeats in the Bundesliga for the first time this season after Die Eisernen lost 2-0 at Bayer Leverkusen.
Two first-half goals sunk the Köpenick club, who finished the game with ten men for the second successive match.
Back to Back Defeats for Union Berlin
Tough Game for Die Eisernen
After Neven Subotic’s suspension following last weekends dismissal, Keven Schlotterbeck returned to the team following a ban of his own after the red card in Augsburg. Marcus Ingvartsen came in for Anthony Ujah in attack after returning to full training.
Despite a slow start, Peter Bosz’s side thought they’d made the breakthrough sixteen minutes in when Lucas Alario fired home from close range, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
Undeterred, Bayer found the opener with their next attempt. Kevin Volland picked the ball up on the left and fired into the far corner. And five minutes later the hosts doubled their advantage. Argentine Alario found the bottom corner, this was was a legitimate goal.
Union started to find their feet and looked lively on the counter. Sebastian Andersson had an opportunity before the break, but the forward wanted too much time on the ball and Bayer cleared the danger.
The visitors made a half time change, and another just after the restart, and they looked likely to reduce the deficit from a set play, but Bayer held firm.
Substitute Sebastian Polter was dismissed with over twenty minutes still to play, receiving a straight red card after just four minutes on the pitch.
Union were unable to find any solutions to a match which was fading away and ended the game in defeat for the second successive weekend.
Can Union Bounce Back?
Following their emphatic win over Borussia Dortmund, which was their first-ever Bundesliga win, Union have struggled.
Die Eisernen welcome Europa League side Eintracht Frankfurt to the Stadion An der Alten Försterei next Friday looking to avoid a third successive defeat.
Frankfurt lost heavily to Arsenal in Europe and will be looking to bounce back themselves.
