Chelsea are set to offer defender Emerson Palmieri a new contract at Stamford Bridge, according to Mail Online’s Alec Fenn. Officials are said to be impressed with the start that Emerson has made to life under new manager Frank Lampard after struggling for the majority of his time while Maurizio Sarri was in charge. The Italy international’s current deal expires in 2022 but the Blues want to extend it by a further year.
Chelsea Set to Offer Emerson Palmieri New Contract
Improvement Brings Reward
Emerson was brought in at the start of last season to bring some competition to the left-back spot. Despite scoring the equaliser against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup win early on in the season, Emerson found it difficult to displace Marcos Alonso from the position, and found most of his game time to come in the successful Europa League campaign, culminating in Chelsea winning the trophy with a 4-1 win against Arsenal in the final in Baku.
However, after Sarri’s departure to Juventus and the arrival of Lampard from Derby County, he has seen an increased number of minutes in the Premier League which, in turn, has brought around a huge up-turn in form. He has made five appearances so far and also played in Italy’s 3-1 win over Armenia on Thursday.
The Deal
Fenn’s report states that Gazetto Dello Sport say Emerson will be handed a pay rise as part of the new contract. This will see his wages rise from £3.5 million to £4.5 million, including performance-related bonuses.
This would signal a massive change in opinion from Chelsea, as it looked likely at times last season that the £18 million signing would go down as a flop. However, Lampard’s arrival has certainly done wonders for Emerson’s confidence and it shows in that Chelsea now want him around for an extra year and that they are willing to part with more money to do so.
