Italian football journalist Fabrizio Romano is reporting that Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian is set to join Serie A side Parma. The transfer was first thought to be a loan deal. However, now the deal for the 29-year-old now looks set to be a permanent transfer.
Matteo Darmian Set To Leave Manchester United
Matteo Darmian – Another Of Manchester United’s Failures?
United and their fans held high hopes for the Italian when he moved to Old Trafford in 2015. However, it has not worked out for him and, as a result, is returning to Italy.
Darmian has seen his appearances decline in recent seasons, partly due to the chopping and changing of Manchester United managers. Louis van Gaal signed him and in his first season with the club Darmian made 33 appearances in all competitions.
However, Louis van Gaal departed and was replaced by Jose Mourinho the following season. The right-back made 25 appearances in the 2016/17, including the Europa League final in which Manchester United won 2-0.
Across the last two seasons, he has made just 17 appearances and has failed to make an impact at Old Trafford. As a result, current manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has chosen to offload the 29-year-old.
Battle For Survival With Parma?
Darmian’s new side narrowly avoided relegation last season by just three points, It meant they survived their first season back in Serie A since reforming in 2015.
Parma narrowly lost their opening game of the 2019/20 season to current Serie A champions Juventus 1-0. However, there will be more important games for Parma this season, as they aim to maintain their place in Serie A.
Darmian will join a host of former Premier League players at Parma. Former Arsenal winger Gervinho is currently plying his trade with the club. Furthermore, Danish striker Andreas Cornelius, formerly of Cardiff City, is also currently with Parma.
