What to Watch on Bundesliga Matchday Two

The 2019/20 Bundesliga season continues this weekend with a few big matches. Borussia Dortmund look to continue themselves as Germany’s top team with a rather easy matchup against FC Koln, while Bayern Munich aim to get back on track with a win over Schalke 04. Here are a few things to keep an eye on throughout Bundesliga matchday two.

Bundesliga Matchday Two

Philippe Coutinho Could Make His First Bayern Munich Appearance

All eyes will be turned to Gelsenkirchen on Saturday when Bayern Munich face Schalke in the day’s latest match. Sure, people will be interested in the result of the match. However, most eyes will be watching with great intrigue to see if Philippe Coutinho will make his first appearance as a Bayern player.

The Brazilian joined the German champions this past weekend and was announced right after the club’s draw with Hertha Berlin.

Niko Kovac will no doubt be hoping the Brazilian will make an immediate impact at his new club. The Bavarians had a turbulent off-season, missing out on their main transfer target Leroy Sane due to an incredibly unfortunate injury, and were largely disappointing in the opening game of the 2019/20 Bundesliga season.

As Bayern’s new number ten, Coutinho has a lot of pressure on his shoulders to step up and perform in the Bavarian capital. This weekend could give the Bayern faithful their first glimpse of what their new signing has to offer.

Union Berlin Aim for First Bundesliga Win

RB Leipzig gave Union Berlin an ice-cold welcome to the Bundesliga last weekend, smashing the newcomers to Germany’s top division 4-0. On Bundesliga matchday two, however, Die Eisernen should feel confident about gaining their first three points of the season.

Union face FC Augsburg, who were crushed 5-1 by Borussia Dortmund this past weekend. Many tip the Bundesliga’s ‘other Bavarians’ to be in for a tough season. Bar a handful of talented players, Augsburg’s squad lacks in quality depth. They have been flirting with relegation for some time, and this season could finally be their year.

Union Berlin should see this as a prime opportunity to register the club’s first Bundesliga victory. RB Leipzig might have spoiled Union’s fun this past weekend, but Augsburg presents a much more manageable opposition. The two sides are close to level on paper, but Union’s passion should see them overcome a rather pedestrian opponent and register a historic win.

Hertha Berlin v Wolfsburg

The Sunday matches on Bundesliga matchday two should both be entertaining affairs. However, the later match of the day is especially promising. Hertha Berlin, who held reigning champions Bayern to a 2-2 draw at the Allianz Arena on Friday, host VfL Wolfsburg at the Olympiastadion on Sunday.

Both sides find themselves on the outskirts of the Bundesliga’s elite heading into the 2019/20 season. However, both sides have ambitions of reaching a European place, at the very least, at the end of the season after each having a great off-season in their own rights. Other than perhaps Bayern Munich vs. Schalke on Saturday, this match is the one to watch on Bundesliga matchday two.
