Andy Lonergan in Line for Liverpool Debut After Adrian Injury

Andy Lonergan

Andy Lonergan could be set to make his Liverpool debut against Southampton this week after Jurgen Klopp revealed Adrian’s ankle injury. The Times’ Paul Joyce confirmed the news on his Twitter account. The former Preston North End goalkeeper was signed on a short-term contract earlier this week and was on the bench for the Super Cup win over Chelsea after initially helping the club out during pre-season.

Midweek Hero on the Treatment Table

Liverpool came into the season with three fit goalkeepers and one on his way back from injury, but are now relying on one signed just earlier this week whose only game time in 2019 has been seven matches with Rochdale in League One.

Simon Mignolet completed a move to Club Brugge on the same day he sat on the bench for Liverpool in the Community Shield defeat to Manchester City. The Reds signed former West Ham United keeper Adrian in his place, and he made his debut far earlier than expected when Alisson was taken off in the opening Premier League win against Norwich City.

The Spaniard had little to do in the game against the Canaries but instantly became a Liverpool hero on Wednesday night when his save from Tammy Abraham’s penalty handed the side their second piece of European silverware in as many months.

Now though, it’s been revealed that Adrian is suffering from a swollen ankle after a pitch-invading fan at the Super Cup slid into the players while they were celebrating.

Step Up, Andy Lonergan

With Alisson out, Adrian a doubt and youngster Caoimhin Kelleher still recovering from his injury, Lonergan looks set to make his Premier League debut at the age of 35.

Initially, he had been brought in as cover during pre-season, with Mignolet the only available goalkeeper through Kelleher’s injury and Alisson participation at the Copa America. Now, he faces a mountain of pressure in trying to keep out a Southampton side who will be all too wary of the weaknesses Liverpool’s side now possess.
