Crystal Palace have signed Everton midfielder James McCarthy for an undisclosed fee. The Irish international has signed a long-term deal at Selhurst Park, and becomes their fourth signing of the summer.
James McCarthy Signs For Crystal Palace
Everton Career
The 28-year-old enjoyed six seasons at Goodison Park before moving onto Crystal Palace.
However, McCarthy has suffered a number of injury setbacks in recent seasons. In January 2018 he broke his leg in a 1-1 draw with West Brom. It saw him miss the remainder of the season.
Subsequently, upon his return, he struggled to make his way back into the Everton side. Last season saw him make just one appearance from the bench.
The Irishman has also suffered a number of hamstring injuries during his time at Goodison Park. He suffered five in four seasons during his time at Everton, including one that saw him miss the rest of the 2016/17 Premier League season.
How Will James McCarthy Fit In At Crystal Palace?
The signing of McCarthy adds to the long list of players that Roy Hodgson can deploy in central midfield. The former England manager currently has five natural central midfielders that he can use, excluding young players. However, at times last season versatile winger Jeffrey Schlupp was used in a midfield three.
However, he may not be the only central midfielder to arrive at Selhurst Park in the last days of the transfer window.
As a result, it is likely that James McCarthy will see himself used as a squad player at Selhurst Park. He will provide useful experience when called upon by Roy Hodgson this season.
What Was Said
Speaking to the official Crystal Palace website, McCarthy said: “I can’t wait to get started. It feels like a very nice club, nice family club.
“I’m delighted to be here; it’s a fresh start that I thought I needed.”
