Despite a very successful transfer window Arsenal have yet to find the so needed the centre-back. Will Dayot Upamecano be their man?
Dayot Upamecano: Arsenal Defensive Target
Arsenal fans are enjoying one of the club’s most successful transfer window in the last few years. The club already bought William Saliba, Gabriel Martinelli, Dani Ceballos and completed their record-breaking signing of Nicolas Pepe. Arsenal are now targeting big names such as Coutinho and Tierney, but one position, in particular, is still unimproved.
Centre-Back Needed
Despite all of these transfers, many fans are complaining that the club hasn’t found a proper centre-back. Saliba will definitely provide strength to the Gooners’ defensive line but he’s coming to the club next season. The French player will spend his last year in his old club Saint-Etienne on loan, after being bought by Arsenal for £27 million.
With only a few days until the end of the transfer window is worrying the supporters. But now Arsenal have apparently found their man.
The Solution?
Dayot Upamecano is a 20-year-old central defender, who currently plays in the Bundesliga for RB Leipzig. The young Frenchman is considered by many as one of the best young defenders.
The league itself heaps praise on Upamecano: He has “astonishing ability in terms of skill and touch, the composure of a player far older and the power of a pick-up truck“.
Transfer Difficulties
Unfortunately for the English club, the French player’s price-tag of around £70 million would make a deal extremely difficult. In comparison, Juventus are pricing Arsenal’s other main transfer target Daniele Rugani at about £55 million.
But a new rumour can give Arsenal fans more confidence and get the transfer closer to being done. Reportedly RB Leipzig demand Arsenal include Emile Smith Rowe, either on loan or permanently, in their bid for the young centre-back.
Arsenal manager Unai Emery had previously revealed that signing a new defender is more difficult for the club than thought. The squad already has many centre-backs and had to free space to make a new transfer possible.
New Hope
A step forward was the sale of ex-Arsenal captain Laurent Koscielny to Bordeaux. The defender was sold to the French club for £4.6 million after nine years with the Gunners.
A surprising transfer can be the rumoured move of Mustafi to Monaco. The criticized German defender can join the club for a fee as high as 27 million pounds.
If Arsenal manage to get Upamecano in the last few days of the transfer window the club will have found a solution to a year-long problem. In combination with the other impressive transfers, the London club will have the ability to be one of the best clubs in this year’s Premier League.
