Bury v MK Dons in Doubt Due to Bury’s Ongoing Problems

Bury v MK Dons

The EFL League One match between Bury and MK Dons could be suspended due to the ongoing crisis at Bury. The side have faced a summer of turmoil, with financial problems crippling the club to the point where they could be expelled from the Football League in less than two weeks’ time.

The EFL Statement

In a short statement posted on their social media channels, the EFL said: “The EFL board met today in respect of the ongoing matters at Bury FC where it determined that if the league is not in receipt of the previously requested information by 12pm on Monday 29 July then the club’s opening day fixture will be suspended.

“Both Bury and MK Dons have been informed of the league’s decision.”

The “previously requested information” that the statement refers to is evidence that the club can repay the enormous levels of debt they are in. If they do not, then they face not only having their opening game suspended, but being kicked out of the league for good.

From Boost to Boot

Another element putting the game into doubt before today had been the fact that the Safety Advisory Group (SAG) hadn’t actually cleared Bury’s stadium, Gigg Lane, to host EFL matches for the coming season.

That issue, though, was resolved today as the necessary paperwork was put through, allowing Gigg Lane to host matches for the coming season at least.

Club Statements

While Bury are yet to comment on the matter, MK Dons said in a statement on their website: “The Club were, this evening [Friday], made aware by the EFL of the potential suspension of our opening day fixture against Bury.

“Given the serious situation that Bury find themselves in, we are very concerned for everyone there and we do very much hope that our match on August 3rd can still go ahead as planned.

“We will continue to keep our supporters up to date as and when we receive further information from the EFL.”
