English Football League Could Expel Bury

League One side Bury could be expelled from the English Football League (EFL) in the next two weeks if they do not provide assurances that they can pay outstanding money to their creditors.

Bury Could Be Expelled From English Football League

Insolvency Event

The club already sit bottom of League One, along with Bolton Wanderers who have also been docked points for similar financial matters, before a ball has even been kicked after being docked 12 points after a CVA agreement was approved by creditors.

Despite this being passed, the EFL says that they have not received enough assurances from the club that the outstanding money can be paid, or that they can source that funding in the future.

If those assurances are not put forward, the EFL could serve the Shakers with a notice of withdrawal of membership, which would give them 14 days to meet the requirements of their insolvency policy or face expulsion from the league.

The EFL will work with the club should they provide that information by the deadline, and will begin negotiations over a membership agreement which will sustain their place in the division and meet the requirements of the CVA.

Season in Doubt

With the League One season set to start in less than 14 days, Bury could technically begin their campaign before facing their potential expulsion. However, their home game against MK Dons on the opening day of the season remains in doubt because their stadium, Gigg Lane, is not yet passed to start the season.

The Safety Advisory Group (SAG) is conducting a meeting today to decide whether Gigg Lane meets the necessary requirements to safely stage EFL fixtures.

If the stadium does not pass, the EFL could suspend Bury’s fixtures.

An ‘Incredibly Difficult and Complex Situation’

In a statement from the EFL, executive chair Debbie Jevans said: “This is an incredibly difficult and complex situation for all those involved, in particular, the staff, players and supporters of the Club. We fully recognise the value and importance of the Club to the local community and its fans, and will continue to work proactively and diligently with the ownership, as we have done over an extended period of time to try and ensure Bury FC has a long term future as a member of the EFL.”
