Aaron Wan-Bissaka Shows Early Signs of Stardom For Manchester United

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Manchester United travelled to Asia on the weekend as part of their pre-season tour where they took on Inter Milan in the International Champions Cup 2019 in Singapore. Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s men emerged victorious in a 1-0 success thanks to a great finish by Mason Greenwood late in the second half. The likes of Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford were all part of the travelling squad to Singapore, but it was new signing Aaron Wan-Bissaka who stole the limelight.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka Immense in United’s Win Over Inter

The Full Back United Have Longed For

Towards the latter end of last season, fans began to get frustrated with the performances of Ashley Young.  At 34-years-old, he is no longer the player he used to be. Young was booed on multiple occasions in Singapore as supporters are keen for his time as a United player to come to an end.

Wan-Bissaka fits the bill of the ‘modern-day full-back’ perfectly. The Englishman showcased his attacking abilities as he linked up nicely with fellow new signing Daniel James on the right-hand side. James was often wasteful in the final third, and the onus was on Wan-Bissaka to recover swiftly and methodically. The youngster showed his grit and determination many times as his pace coupled with his tackling abilities were applauded around the ground.

More Than a Defender

While Wan-Bissaka is naturally suited to a right-sided defensive role, his abilities demonstrate potential to play in a multitude of other positions. The 21-year old’s Man of the Match performance saw him drift centrally to break up the Inter attacking threat. He played a vital role in regaining possession for the Reds as well as intercepting lacklustre passes in the middle of the park.

Going forward, Wan-Bissaka was great too; his pace and technical abilities saw him get past defenders with ease. However, on a few occasions, his delivery was underwhelming, either failing to beat the first man or missing his target completely.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka is One For The Future

At just 21, Wan-Bissaka still has a long career ahead of him and could really make a name for himself at United if all goes well. With Young, Diogo Dalot and Wan-Bissaka all available as right-back options, Solskjær will need to decide who will play in which competition. Showing early signs of great promise, it looks like Aaron Wan-Bissaka will be the first choice right-back for the upcoming season. Reports have also come out regarding the potential signing of Lille’s Nicolas Pepe which could force Dalot to the bench, as he would normally be a good option to occupy the right flank.
