It’s looking increasingly like Huddersfield Town will be playing back in the Championship next season. While they rode a wave of momentum throughout most of last season, their squad just hasn’t been able to cope with the pressures of the Premier League in this campaign. However, there are some players from the current Terriers squad that will be important to them, regardless of the division they’re in.
Karlan Grant Among Players Key to Huddersfield Town Next Season
Karlan Grant
Karlan Grant joined Huddersfield Town from Charlton Athletic in the January transfer window. The fee was undisclosed, but is thought to be in the region of £2 million. Already the joint top scorer with Mathias Zanka, the Englishman has shown the reason he was brought in.
Grant will be instrumental next season for the Terriers. He has already shown Premier League quality, netting against Arsenal and a brace against West Ham United, but would be equally as potent in the Championship. There is no reason why the youngster could not hit around 20 goals in a season. The step up from League One to the Premier League is a big one, but Grant has taken it in his stride. The fee paid for Grant by the Terriers was a shrewd move and was certainly a bargain.
Juninho Bacuna
Juninho Bacuna is another youngster who will be important for the Terriers next year. The midfielder scored his first goal against West Ham United last weekend. The Dutch U21 international took time to settle into Premier League football. However, following the game against the Hammers, Bacuna showed why he was brought in from FC Groningen.
The midfielder will be a good replacement for Aaron Mooy, who is likely to stay in the Premier League should Jan Siewert’s side face the drop. The Terriers will need options in midfield, and the Dutchman fits the bill.
Just as Mooy was instrumental for the Terriers the last time they were in the Championship, Bacuna will be the same this time. The youngster has now found his feet in the squad, putting in the work and showing the determination.
Jon Gorenc Stanković
The Slovenian centre-back has come into his own over the last few games. The defender joined the Terriers in 2016 but only made seven appearances in the Championship. Stankovic has so far made six appearances in the Premier League this season, having made none at all in 2017/18.
The 23-year-old would be a formidable force in the Championship after finding his feet this season. Teamed up with Christopher Schindler, the pair will be a force to be reckoned with. With the likely departures of Zanka and Terence Kongolo in the summer window, this partnership will be important to Huddersfield Town.
Adding into the defensive pack will be 20-year-old Demeaco Duhaney. The right-back signed from Manchester City in the summer window of 2018. His debut for the Terriers saw him impress Siewert. The youngster will be another player who will be instrumental for Huddersfield Town.
Youngsters mixed with experience is the way forward for Siewert. The summer window will be the most important so far for the Terriers. Building the team around Grant, Bacuna, Stankovic, Schindler and Duhaney will be the key to success going forward for his side.
