Real Madrid announced the signing of Porto defender Eder Militao for a reported £42.7 million. Militao becomes the first signing of the Zinedine Zidane’s second spell at the La Liga outfit.
Who Is Eder Militao?
Eder Militao is the first signing of Zinedine Zidane’s second spell at the Santiago Bernabeu. Zidane’s new signing is versatile because he is able to play in defence and as a holding midfielder. He has played for Porto mainly in the centre-back position and has formed a key partnership with Felipe.
His one appearance for Brazil occurred in September 2018 in a comfortable victory against El Salvador. The Porto star had been linked to a move to the Premier League with Liverpool a possible destination. Porto bought the player recently in August 2018 from Sao Paulo for £14.5 million. The Portuguese giants will be frustrated to lose their player only months after signing him.
How Will Militao Fit into Zidane’s Plans?
Zidane will have identified the issues with Real Madrid due to his well-earned break. The issue of a fragile defence was glaring against Ajax leading to them addressing it. The new signing’s versatility to play in different positions may also provide competition for the likes of Dani Carvajal and Casemiro. Militao is certainly an upgrade on Nacho, who has struggled when given opportunities this season.
Does the Militao Signing Mean the End of Sergio Ramos?
This purchase will question what the future holds now for captain Ramos. Zinedine Zidane may see the new signing as a long-term partner for Raphael Varane. Sergio Ramos‘ dwindling form this year is leading to many fans questioning his future. The Spanish international’s suspension for the second leg against Ajax was key in Real Madrid’s exit. A recent fall-out with Florentino Perez and Real Madrid fans may lead Ramos to leave.
Militao is likely to be the first signing of many at the Bernabeu this summer. Many fans will be watching with intrigue if they are able to rebuild after this dismal season. They will be also looking for them to be a force for next season’s La Liga and European campaigns.
