What Has Jurgen Klopp Achieved at Liverpool?

Jurgen Klopp

Liverpool are by no means out of the title race. However, Manchester City currently have the upper hand with nine games remaining. If Liverpool fail to win the Premier League or Champions League, it will make it another season without a trophy for Jurgen Klopp at Anfield. If that is the case, what does Jurgen Klopp have to show for his time at Liverpool?

What Has Jurgen Klopp Achieved at Anfield?

Reformer

The German has undoubtedly reformed Liverpool. He has created one of the most feared front three in the world. As well as this, Liverpool now possess one of the world’s best goalkeepers and centre-backs. However, there is very little to show for this transformation. Creating world-class players such as Virgil van Dijk needs trophies to show for it.

Liverpool have finished runner-up in three different competitions in his time at Anfield. Two have come in European competitions. The most famous being last season’s Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid. A 3-1 defeat and two mistakes from Loris Karius gifted the Spanish giants the trophy. It sparked the search for now Liverpool ‘keeper Alisson.

Moreover, the best chance for European silverware came in the 2015/16 Europa League final. However, yet again Liverpool failed to capitalise on the chance. They ultimately lost 3-1 to Sevilla. His infamous gegenpress style should be suited to European football but is yet to see success in Europe.

Even in English competitions, he has been unsuccessful as of yet. In the Premier League, he has finished eighth, followed by two fourth-place finishes. His FA Cup record is abysmal. As Liverpool manager, he has never made it past the 4th round. Klopp’s saving grace with European competitions comes with Carabao Cup. His Liverpool side yet again finished runner-up in the 2015/16 competition to Manchester City.

How Can Klopp and Liverpool Improve?

Dropping points against teams outside of the top six is one area. Liverpool have drawn four of their last six Premier League games. Three of those draws have come against teams outside of the top six. Last season was a similar story. Out of their 12 draws, six of those came against sides outside of the top six. Something that must be improved on.

It could be argued that Liverpool have become over-reliant on their front three. Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino all Liverpool’s top scorers yet again this season. The trio also occupied the top spots last season for assists as well. However, this year Liverpool’s assists chart is topped by Andrew Robertson. While it shows a slight improvement, work is there to be done.

Can He go Further in His Career?

Recently, Klopp has been linked with the managerial job at Real Madrid. While he has a reputation for attractive football, it may be a step too far at this stage. He needs to add to his trophy collection with Liverpool before making the next step.
