A club in transition, Bayern Munich are in need of change. Expected to revamp their once dominant squad in the summer, Bayern will be in the market new players. Trying to get younger, but maintain the squads quality, the team will be moving on from household names. As they prepare to spend big, Bayern need to buy the right players if they’re to maintain their Bundesliga dominance. We will be taking a look at five players the German giants should try and bring to the Allianz this summer.
Five Players Bayern Munich Should Sign This Summer
Lucas Hernandez – A Much Needed Addition
Attempting to sign Hernandez during the winter window, Bayern should return for the French World Cup winner in the summer. Willing to activate the player’s €85 million release clause, the 22-year-old defender is a key target. However, the two clubs failed to reach an agreement in January, leading to a drop in asking price. Atletico Madrid are now reportedly willing to let the player leave for around €65 million. Capable of playing either centre-back or left-back, the Frenchman would be a useful addition. Hernandez is sought after for his quality, versatility and potential. The club are also linked with RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano as the club prepare to move on from their ageing centre-backs.
Philipp Max – Full-Back Depth
Lacking options at the back, Bayern Munich have just one left-back: David Alaba. Now, it may seem like a suicidal decision, but the club are happy having no clear backup for now. In the team’s one game without Alaba, manager Niko Kovač started midfielder Leon Goretzka. Struggling throughout, the club’s lack of depth showed. This must change in the summer. One of the Bundesliga’s most consistent players, Augsburg’s Philipp Max would be an ideal fit in Munich. Solid defensively, Max is also creative, capable of pushing forward just like Alaba.
Contributing two goals and six assists so far this season, the 25-year-old would thrive in Bayern’s system. Similar to Alaba, the German defender is attack-minded, spending most of the game in the opposition’s half. A key player for Augsburg, Max has a contract until 2022, making this potential signing fairly expensive. Valued at around €15-20 million, he would be a quality addition to Bayern’s squad. The club could, of course, look elsewhere. Wolfsburg’s Jérôme Roussillon and Hertha Berlin’s Marvin Plattenhardt are both capable options.
Arne Maier – Deep-Lying Midfielder
Reportedly searching for a deep-lying midfielder, Bayern Munich have plenty of options. Linked with the likes of Adrien Rabiot and others, the club would do well to look closer to home. One of the Bundesliga’s best young talents this season has been Hertha Berlin’s, Arne Maier. Drawing comparisons to former Bayern player Toni Kroos, the Germany U21 star has been a standout in Hertha’s midfield. As the club prepares to move on from Javi Martinez, signing Maier makes sense. Young, talented and bringing world-class potential, the 20-year-old could develop into a vital piece of the Bayern puzzle. Costing around €20 million, the youngster’s fee is worth the risk. Maier not only fills a need, but gambling on him could pay off big time.
Callum Hudson-Odoi – Replacing Legends
As Bayern prepare for Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery to leave in the summer, the club are tasked with replacing two legends. The team will now rely on Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman moving forward. Bayern also added teenager Alphonso Davies in January, but they are looking for a fourth player. Callum Hudson-Odoi is still a priority in Munich. Attempting to put together a fearsome foursome, Bayern can lure the 18-year-old away with the promise of game time. Refusing to give him the playing time he deserves, Chelsea look set to lose their best prospect. Replacing a legendary duo isn’t easy, but signing Hudson-Odoi would be a good first step.
Luka Jović – The Heir To Lewandowski’s Throne
One of the Bundesliga’s best strikers this season, Jovic has played a key role in Frankfurt. On loan from Benfica, Frankfurt will look to buy the Serb in the summer, before selling him on for profit. Previously agreeing on a fee with Benfica, Jovic will only cost Frankfurt €12 million. Potentially costing a club like Bayern €50-60 million, Jovic is in high demand. As the likes of Bayern, Real Madrid and Barcelona circle for the 21-year-old, the striker’s price continues to rise. In recent years, Robert Lewandowski has been the main man in Munich. The dominant Polish striker is now 30-years-old. It’s time for Bayern to begin a search for his long-term replacement. Jovic can be that player, as he possesses all the traits of a world class striker.
