Spurs hand the Baggies Moore time in the Premiership

The Baggies in crucial victory over Spurs

Jake Livermore struck the winning goal in second-half stoppage time as The Baggies kept their survival hopes alive with a last-gasp 1-0 victory over Tottenham at The Hawthorns.

Whilst Spurs are chasing the Champions League, the home side are facing the Championship.

Kane has not been at his prolific best since returning from an ankle injury last month. he missed a golden opportunity midway through the first half after being picked out by Kieran Trippier.

Baggies denied by Alderweireld

West Brom gained confidence toward the latter of the half. A half which saw Spurs hold possession, but failing to convert. Jay Rodriguez found a long ball into the box to lob over Hugo Lloris only to see Toby Alderweireld head his effort over the bar. Proving his undoubted excellence in his role.

Moments later, Ahmed Hegazi jumped up in the box, his head meeting Matt Phillips’ in-coming corner. Unlucky to have to watch his shot drift just wide of the far post.

Kane, still not at his best following his ankle injury snatched at a good opportunity midway through the first half. Meeting a superb ball from Kieran Trippier, denied only again by a Forster stop.

West Brom towards the end of the half had a few a great chances to score. Jay Rodriguez found a long ball into the box to lob over Hugo Lloris, only to find the head of Alderweireld tipping it and over the bar. Moments later, Ahmed Hegazi rose highest inside the box to meet Matt Phillips’ corner, but his header drifted just wide of the far post.

Tension Rose as he and Nyom booked.

Spurs continued to find it difficult to break down the Baggies down into the second forty five. The Baggies defensive improvement clearly showing the influence of new boss Darren Moore, but still the slow pace, typical of previous meetings between the two.

A touch-line altercation between Danny Rose and Allan Nyom with pushing and shoving from both following a 50/50 tackle. The tussle resulting in Nyom going to ground dramatically despite minimal contact from Rose.

Both players were booked, but Nyom wasn’t finished. First squaring up aggressively to the referee, he lunged again at Rose, stopped only by his teammates. West Brom were lucky not to be a man down. The only excitement so far in a largely turgid tie.j

The North Londoners closest strike came from an on-target Eriksen free kick, slapping the palms of Forster in another fine save. The addition of Son Heung-Min and Lucas Moura did little to help.

Nearly Pain for Kane

Harry Kane almost added to his goal tally at the wrong end. His attempted clearance forcing Hugo Lloris into a reactionary save just on the last quarter. Jan Vertonghen limped off injured with five minutes to go. Spurs missed him instantly.

West Brom found a gap to score from a corner in injury time. Craig Dawson’s initial header eventually falling into a five man goal mouth scramble. Entangled Lloris could only watch Livermore shuffling the ball over the line.

An ugly but mammoth goal and lifeline for the Baggies. A disastrous one for Spurs, who were hoping to retain their five point gap on fifth placed Chelsea. They will be looking to Liverpool for help by halting the Blues’ pursuit of their fourth spot in their clash tomorrow.

A clearly unhappy Mauricio Pochettino spoke briefly to BBC Sport following the game. “Well, We are in the race for the top four positions to play Champion’s League football next season. Of course that defeat disappointed us. We now have bad feelings about the game.”

Darren Moore, the popular new West Brom coach had this to say “We played a very difficult game against Spurs. They asked us a lot of questions, but we trusted the shape, the team, the concentration. We desperately needed that goal, and we got it. “
