Reece Oxford to Return to Borussia Monchengladbach on Loan From West Ham

West Ham United’s 19-year-old defender Reece Oxford is set to return to Borussia Monchengladbach next week. Oxford played a limited role during his loan deal. West Ham manager David Moyes recalled the centre-back shortly before the New Year. However, a return to Germany now appears likely.

Reece Oxford Likely to Make Bundesliga Return to Borussia Monchengladbach

According to reports in The Sun, Monchengladbach are looking for the English Under-20 international to return to Borussia-Park. This is despite only making a handful of starts. Dieter Hecking, however, seems determined for Oxford to return. With Moyes apparently now content to let the player gain more experience with Monchengladbach, the deal looks set to go through.

RB Leipzig are also believed to have had an interest in bringing Oxford who can moonlight in central midfield. However, a move to Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side almost certainly won’t be happening.

The caveat of Oxford’s lack of game time is that it was in December that he broke into the side. He featured in the games against Freiburg, Hamburg and Bayer Leverkusen. The club was intent on making the player an offer of a permanent deal, but a figure believed to be in the region of £8 million was rejected by the Hammers.

Oxford Not the Only Young Englishman Making his Mark at  Monchengladbach

Oxford aside, another young English player is on the brink of establishing himself at the club. 20-year-old Mandela Egbo was named in the first team squad on Friday night, for the first time. The former England youth international from Hackney was a part of the squad in the 2-0 defeat away to Eintracht Frankfurt.

Egbo was previously on a scholarship at Crystal Palace, but when the club offered professional terms, the right-back rejected the offer. Instead, he signed a four-year deal with Monchengladbach in 2015. Now he has risen through the ranks and his inclusion for the defeat at the Commerzbank Arena is the clearest sign yet of the fulfilment of his potential.
