Wigan Athletic striker Will Grigg was once on everyone’s mind last year. His name was even famously sung to the tune of “Freed from Desire” by GALA. However, since then, his presence dropped off the footballing radar. After a positive start to this season, is he destined to make us sing his name universally once again?
Is Will Grigg Finding His Feet Once More?
Lackluster Form Last Season
Last season proved to be a torrid return to the Championship for Wigan Athletic. Following promotion to the second-tier, the Latics were relegated back to League One with a total of just 42 points.
During their return season to the Championship, goals appeared to be a daunting factor for the Lancashire club. Despite having the fire-power of both Will Grigg and Omar Bogle, the Latics struggled for goals.
As for Grigg, it proved to be the worst season in his career. Scoring only five league goals last season, the Northern Irish international seemingly lost his shooting boots.
Furthermore, Grigg was a shell of his usual self during the campaign, as he has notably smashed the 20 goal mark in the seasons prior to the 2016/17 campaign.
Proven Track-Record In League One
For the best part of his career, Will Grigg has spent a hefty chunk as a League One player. Formerly on the books at MK Dons, Brentford and Walsall, Grigg has shown his worth as a top player in the third-tier.
In his first breakout season at Walsall, Grigg scored 19 goals for the Saddlers. Then whilst on-loan at MK Dons from Brentford, he scored 20 goals, in the Milton Keynes promotion winning season.
Then, in his first season as Wigan Athletic player, he scored 25 league goals as the Latics lifted the League One title in the 2015/16 campaign.
This Season
So far this season, Will Grigg has netted four goals, three of which have been scored in the league. He is now just two goals off his league tally from last season.
Currently sitting at the top of League One, Wigan Athletic are enjoying their return to the third-tier. They have scored the most league goals (36) and conceded the least (12). On this evidence, goals are not in short-supply for Paul Cook’s side.
At this point, the Latics sit pretty at the top of the third-tier. As the regular English football season heads into the festive period, Wigan’s grip on top spot could tighten.
Moreover, one has to wonder; shall Will Grigg spring to life with more goals? Can he find his typical League One which has been the pinnacle of his career?
