Chelsea have completed the signing of Davide Zappacosta from Torino. The Italian right back joins in a surprise move on deadline day, with minimal media noise in the days previous. The Italian international joins for a fee in the region of £20 million. He jumps straight into training with Antonio Conte, after being left out of the Italian squad.

Chelsea Sign Davide Zappacosta
Much like Marcos Alonso or David Luiz last season, the Zappacosta deal comes out of nowhere. Small rumblings early summer, nothing for most of the window, then a completed deal. The Italian adds much needed depth at right wingback for Victor Moses. A strong crosser of the ball and good contributor in the attacking phase, his touch of quality in the final ball is what Chelsea lack.
He was one of Serie A’s best fullbacks last season. Sky’s Fabrizio Romano says, “Born to Run. Typical Conte’s player.” However, it is unlikely he will slide immediately into a starting role. With competition on all fronts, it is an important deal for Chelsea to make. The squad is still thin, but signing Zappacosta goes a long way. He alleviates many of the fears over wingback depth.
Deadline Day Madness
In the final hours of the deadline, signing Zappacosta is a good deal, especially at the price. If he turns out half as well as Marcos Alonso (a moderately unknown Serie A wingback), Chelsea supporters are in for a treat.
