Arsenal winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has turned down a move to Chelsea despite a £40m bid being agreed between the two London sides. Reports suggest that the 24-year-old wants to move to Liverpool even if it means playing for a lower wage.
Oxlade-Chamberlain, who arrived at the Emirates back in 2011, has featured in every game for The Gunners so far this season, including their Community Shield triumph over Chelsea. He has become increasingly unhappy at the club, however, and is not content with Arsene Wenger’s decision to play him on the right side of midfield. It would seem that he wants to leave the club in search of a central midfield role.
Oxlade-Chamberlain has made 198 appearances for the club, scoring 20 goals. He has played 27 times for England, scoring six goals, and has also been selected by Gareth Southgate for his latest squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Malta and Slovakia respectively. His focus should be on Friday’s game away at Malta but transfer activity has become a major distraction.
Oxlade-Chamberlain turns down Chelsea
Tuesday saw Arsenal and Chelsea agree a £40m fee for the player, but it has since been confirmed that the wantaway winger has turned down a move to the reigning Premier League champions due to the fact the Blues want to use him as a wing-back.
Arsenal are keen to let him depart for a hefty sum but it seems personal terms stand in the way of that happening. Liverpool are yet to put in an offer, which could be because they are looking to capture the signature of Monaco midfielder Thomas Lemar instead, but time is running out in the transfer window.
Should their persuit in singing the Frenchman fail, their heads could be turned to the Arsenal man, though the Gunners should expect the offer to be significantly lower than Chelsea’s. However, if they don’t sell the former Southampton midfielder this summer, their only option will be to see him go for free at the expiration of his contract next summer.
