Last week, Championship side Hull City turned down a £5 million offer from top flight Burnley for midfielder Sam Clucas. The Clarets have now improved their bid to £10 million, but the Tigers are remaining firm in their attempts to hold onto him. It has also been reported that club have opened talks with the 26-year-old over a new contract, despite his signing a new three-year deal last August.
Clucas, who has two years remaining on his current deal, joined Hull back in 2015 from Chesterfield and has since gone on to make 95 appearances for the club, scoring nine goals in the process. During the 2015-16 season, the Lincoln-born midfield was a crucial part of his side’s promotion to the Premier League, before making a name for himself in England’s top flight last campaign with a number of strong appearances.
So far this campaign, Clucas has picked up where he left off. He played the full 90 minutes in Hull’s season opener against Aston Villa at the start of the month, as well as playing 71 minutes in his side’s 4-1 thrashing of Burton Albion at the weekend.
Despite having their second bid rejected, Burnley could still come back with an even bigger offer after gaining £18.5 million from the sale of André Gray to Watford last week. Hull manager Leonid Slutsky, however, has told the club’s owners that he doesn’t want to lose any more players in this transfer window and turning down a hefty bid of £10 million for Clucas will be seen as a statement of intent.
