Chelsea have signed Alvaro Morata from Real Madrid, pending the agreement of personal terms and completion of a medical. Morata becomes the club’s record signing with the fee rumoured to be around £70m. Conte has long been an admirer of the Spanish international, bringing him to Juventus prior to his resignation in 2014. The 24-year-old is expected to join the club later next week in China.

With the last club record signing, Fernando Torres, being a resounding flop it is hard for Chelsea supporters not to be anxious. But Morata is a signing that makes sense. He is big man who can dribble, connects well with surrounding attackers, and a clinical finisher. Although he may not be as prolific as some, his ability to bring others into the game is important.
27 goals in 52 appearances last year, including 15 in 14 starts in La Liga, is a respectable haul. Although Morata represents a risk given his fee, it is a calculated one. At only 24 years old, the Spaniard is an appreciating asset. With Diego Costa expected to return to Atlético Madrid in the near future, Morata is a sensible acquisition.
Morata Moving Forward
Eager to move on from playing second fiddle, Morata will be the main man at Chelsea. Given the free flowing football Chelsea produced last season, his productivity is integral to the Blues, whether that be as a focal point for Hazard and Pedro to combine with, or dropping in and turning provider. With the potential for Antonio Conte to adopt a 3-5-2, a Batshuayi-Morata combination could be deadly given both strikers’ desire to impress. Eden Hazard will miss the start of the season due to injury, and this may very well be the set up on opening day.
Chelsea have already confirmed the signing of Tiemoue Bakayoko, Willy Caballero and Antonio Rudiger, all of which act as suitable replacements for the players lost last year. Expect more additions as they look to strengthen for a Champions League push.
