Manchester City signing Kyle Walker could become the most expensive English player in after signing for a reported initial fee of roughly £50 million, including add-ons. This could make him the most expensive defender of any nationality in history. At 27 years of age, he is near the peak of his ability and will be able to provide City with several years of quality service.
The demand will have played a part in the sizeable price tag. Tottenham are supplying City’s desperate need for a quality right-back. After losing out on Dani Alves, and with no right-backs at the club a month before the start of the season, the capture of Walker is crucial. Pep Guardiola has gained a defender with pace and attacking intent, who has gradually silenced his critics with consistently strong displays, and is one of the best right-backs in the Premier League.
This transfer will also have an impact on Spurs in terms of their own squad depth. Kieran Trippier had a strong end to last season, whilst Kyle Walker-Peters, similar both in name and playing style, could be a future replacement. The young defender recently scored in a ‘closed door’ friendly against Leyton Orient. He too has attacking intent, some pace, and fits into the modern wing-back category. Depending on whether Mauricio Pochettino decides to bring in reinforcements or not, he should be getting an increased amount of playing time next season.
Overall, City have secured a brilliant defender, whilst Spurs have lost out on a faithful servant. This could turn out to be a good deal for both parties, as the buyers have greatly strengthened their squad, whilst Spurs have received a hefty sum of money with which to improve their own side. It all now depends on Levy’s ability to bring in an equal replacement, or Pochettino’s faith to promote a young player.
