Transfer Turnstile: The lastest on Newcastle, Lemar, Giroud, Szczesny, and Foyth

The transfer rumour mill is a fast-paced smattering of elements of truth mixed up with a whole lot of smoke. Nonetheless, sifting through the mess can be fruitful (sometimes), so let’s take a look at the transfer turnstile that was today.

Lastest on Newcastle, Lemar, Giroud, Szczesny, and Foyth

1. Newly promoted Newcastle looking for new talent

Newcastle United have been without top-flight football for long enough. The club are wasting no time, seemingly looking to make the most of their first season as a newly promoted club. There are three reports making their way around Newcastle, all of which make a bit of sense.

Newcastle seem poised to complete a deal to sign Norwich City’s Jacob Murphy, according the Daily Mirror. At £8million, the former England U-21 seems worth the asking price for Benitez. At just 22, he has enough experience not to hinder, but also enough room to grow with an experienced manager.

Winger Jesus Navas is said to be on Rafa Benitez’s radar by several publications including The Mirror and The Sun. The player was touted for a return to Spain, but it appears Sevilla have balked at the asking price. The Mirror goes on to claim that Joe Hart is also a possibility for Newcastle, as former would-be suitors West Ham have become cool.

Manchester City midfielder Fabian Delph is an interesting situation. While not panning out quite as some were hoping for at The Etihad, he still finds himself on the periphery of Gareth Southgate for a coveted spot in England’s World Cup squad. According to The Mail on Sunday, Newcastle might just provide him with a chance to prove his worth. Stoke are also said to be in for Delph.

2. Wenger, Arsenal still determined to land Lemar

Arsenal have made a third attempt to land the 21-year-old Thomas Lemar from Monaco. Reports from The Mirror suggest an improved bid has been made after bids of £30m and £40m were turned down. If Wenger can land a third quality signing (Kolasinac, Lacazette), the club will have gone a long way to addressing much needed soft spots. It seems talks of Mahrez to Arsenal have cooled as of late, with all focus seemingly on Lemar—well, and on Alexis Sanchez re-signing, of course.

3. Poch looking for Argentinian aid

Tottenham’s Mauricio Pochettino is reportedly boasting a bid of £10m for Estudiantes defender Juan Foyth. The Daily Mirror report that the runners-up are in for the 19-year-old centre-back who played for Argentina at the U-20 World Cup. With an already strong midfield presence, this deal would certainly solidfy the position for years to come.

4. Buffon’s successor inching closer?

Juventus are reportedly inching closer Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny. The Daily Mirror report the two sides, Juventus and Arsenal, are closing in on an agreed price tag. Rumours circulated in June that the Polish international would be groomed by the Serie A club after an excellent season on loan to Roma. However, with the Gunners announcing the signing of former keeper Jens Lehmann to its coaching staff, the position is unclear. Let’s see if this painfully long, drawn-out process has a mutually happy ending.

5. Olivier Giroud staying in England?

Olivier Giroud has certainly made way for Alexandre Lacazette as Arsenal’s first choice striker. And for much of last season, Wenger opted for others ahead of Giroud, most notably Alexis Sanchez. With others nibbling at his heels for top spot striker position for France ahead of the World Cup, a move to Ligue 1 has been an obvious rumour. But recent days suggest several clubs, most notably Everton, have looked to the French striker. With an impressive goals per minute record, he would certainly fill some of the void at the position for the Toffees.
