A crucial month lies ahead for Bayern Munich as they look to clinch their 27th Bundesliga title. Additionally, a marquee match-up against Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final awaits them in the middle of the month. Here’s a look at the upcoming fixtures for the defending Bundesliga champions in April.
April 1st vs FC Augsburg
Bayern have a chance to complete the league double against Augsburg on the first day of April. In the reverse fixture, they won by a final score of 3-1. Robert Lewandowski led the way in the victory with a brace.
Augsburg find themselves in the bottom half of the table and failed to win a match during the month of March. Perhaps the derby atmosphere will give them a bit of a boost as they are in need of a positive result to start off the month.
April 4th vs Hoffenheim
Just a few days after the game against Augsburg, Bayern will be back in action as they travel to face Hoffenheim, who are in the thick of the battle for the Champions League places. This could be a tough test for the defending champions as they will be without goalkeeper Manuel Neuer for the second consecutive match.
Hoffenheim enter April on a five-match unbeaten run and won two of their three matches in March. In the two sides’ first meeting this season, it ended in a 1-1 deadlock.
April 8th vs Borussia Dortmund
One of the biggest matches of the month in the Bundesliga will come right before their Champions League match against Real Madrid. It will be interesting to see how Bayern line up for this match, with the semi-final match only a few days away. Carlo Ancelotti could well rest some of the usual starters.
Dortmund will also be looking towards their Champions League quarter-final match-up, which takes place on the following Tuesday, which gives them one less day of rest than Bayern will have for their match.
The reverse fixture saw Dortmund pick up a 1-0 win in November. This match could pit the top two goalscorers in the Bundesliga against each other, as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Lewandowski are in a fierce battle for the golden boot award.
April 12th vs Real Madrid
The two-leg quarter-final between these two European superpowers is the most anticipated set of matches in April. It will be imperative that Bayern do not find themselves down on aggregate due to away goals. A win here will set them up nicely for their trip to Spain a week later. Real Madrid’s last loss came in February and they are out to defend their Champions League title.
April 15th vs Bayer Leverkusen
A disappointing Bayer Leverkusen will host Bayern for what normally is a highly anticipated match. Die Werkself have struggled this season and are fighting to stay in the top half of the table. They are unlikely to make the European places, but they still have a realistic chance of upsetting Bayern at home.
April 18th vs Real Madrid
This match will likely be closely contested. Expect Real Madrid to come out strong as they have done quite well at home this season. It will likely be all or nothing in the second leg of the quarter-final.
Aprill 22nd vs Mainz
Bayern will return home after two consecutive matches on the road. They beat Mainz, who have been poor away from home this season, 3-1 in the reverse fixture. This will be the seventh match for Bayern Munich in April, and they will have to avoid letting fatigue get the better of them.
April 26th vs Borussia Dortmund
These two clubs will meet once more in the latter stages of the DFB-Pokal. In last season’s final the two met up as Bayern won the title in a penalty shootout. This will be the second meeting of the month for these two clubs. Expect a thrilling match with the potential for lots of goals.
April 29th vs Wolfsburg
The marathon of matches in April comes to a close when Bayern travel to face Wolfsburg. It’s been a dismal season for Wolfsburg and the club will in search of any results they can get this month. The two clubs have already met twice this season; Bayern won 5-0 in the reverse league meeting in December and won 1-0 in the cup tie between the two in February.
