La Liga Sunday Review

Three of the top six clubs were in action on Sunday in La Liga. Villarreal’s visit to Sevilla was the marquée match of the day. Elsewhere, Real Madrid saw their match against Celta Vigo postponed to a later date due to poor weather conditions. Here’s a complete recap of the day’s action in the Spanish top flight.

Sevilla vs. Villarreal

Nothing went right for Sevilla on Sunday as they missed a golden opportunity to pick up much-needed points in the title race. The hosts suffered a missed Samir Nasri penalty in the 49th minute and Wissam Ben Yedder’s goal in the 59th minute was disallowed for offside.

Villarreal saw a brilliant performance from goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo, who made multiple saves in the match. The club remain in sixth place in the table after Sunday’s result. For Sevilla, the club have lost and drawn their last two matches, which sees them two points behind Barcelona and three behind Real Madrid.

Sporting Gijón vs. Alavés

Alavés claimed their sixth win of the season with a 4-2 victory on the road. An ill-disciplined Gijón side conceded two penalties, and seven of their players were booked during the match.

Four different players scored for Alavés, as Rubén Sobrino, Christian Santos, Édgar Méndez and Alexis each found the back of the net. The home side saw both of their goals come in the final ten minutes of the match, with Lacina Traore and Carlos Castro scoring.

Gijón are still in the relegation zone in 18th and their defence continues to be exposed, as they have now let in the second most goals in the league at 43. Alavés remain in 12th and are only three points away from reaching the top half of the table.

Real Sociedad vs. Osasuna

A 15-minute span in the second-half saw Real Sociedad score three goals, which allowed them to take all three points at home against Osasuna. After trailing for most of the match, Raúl Navas equalised in the 62nd minute, with Carlos Vela and Juanmi scoring soon after to put their side 3-1 up. A late goal from Osasuna made things interesting, but they were unable to find the equaliser.

Real Sociedad will occupy fifth in the league heading into next week’s fixtures, as they recovered from last week’s 3-0 defeat to Real Madrid. Osasuna remain in 19th and have let in a league worst 46 goals this season. They will face Real Madrid next Saturday.
