Saturday’s action in the Bundesliga featured plenty of eye-catching match-ups, as the season now enters February. We recap the day’s results around the German top flight.
Bayern Munich vs. Schalke
An entertaining match ended in a 1-1 draw, as Schalke picked up an all-important point against the league leaders. This was only the third point earned by Schalke against an opponent in the top half of the table. As for Bayern, the Bavarian club extend their unbeaten streak to nine matches in all competitions.
Robert Lewandowski scored his 15th league goal of the season to give Bayern an early advantage in the ninth minute. However, Schalke would equalise minutes later when Naldo dispatched a well-placed and driven shot. Bayern were unable to find a winner in the second half, despite out-shooting their opponents 12 to seven.
Hertha BSC vs. Ingolstadt
Hertha Berlin claimed a 1-0 victory thanks to the second-fastest goal in the Bundesliga this season. It only took the home side 61-seconds to net the goal as Salomon Kalou’s cross found Genki Haraguchi, who dispatched it into the back of the net.
The win ends Hertha’s two-match losing streak in the Bundesliga. Ingolstadt will remain second from the bottom, as they missed a chance to pick up points before they embark on tough fixtures ahead. They will face Bayern, Eintracht Frankfurt, Hoffenheim and Köln in the coming weeks.
Borussia Mönchengladbach vs. SC Freiburg
Mönchengladbach’s impressive form under new manager Dieter Hecking continued on Saturday, as they defeated Freiburg 3-0. The hosts saw all three of their goals come in the final 20 minutes of the match. Lars Stindl’s sublime finish in the 73rd minute got things started, as Raffael and Patrick Herrmann followed with goals of their own.
Freiburg remain in eighth place following Saturday’s result and Mönchengladbach are into the top half of the table in tenth. Under Hecking, Mönchengladbach have taken seven points from their first three matches with the new manager. This was just their second home win in the last six this season.
Hoffenheim vs. Mainz
Hoffenheim erupted for a 4-0 win to extend their home unbeaten streak to ten matches. The hosts were led by Adam Szalai, who netted a second-half brace. Mark Uth and Marco Terrazzino also scored for the winners.
After today’s result Hoffenheim are fourth in the table, as their European dream continues. Mainz are down to 12th, as they have now lost their last six away matches in the league.
FC Köln vs. Wolfsburg
A late penalty in 81st minute allowed Anthony Modeste to score his 15th goal of the season and give Köln all three points. The club from Western Germany have now taken seven points from their last three matches and are right in the hunt for a European place. Wolfsburg have dropped two straight and are far from safety at the bottom of the table.
Borussia Dortmund vs. RB Leipzig
The marquee match of the day took place at Signal Iduna Park, as Borussia Dortmund played host to RB Leipzig. Tensions ran high throughout the match, and a late off-side call allowed Dortmund to escape with a 1-0 win. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored the match-winner in the 35th minute, as he recorded his league leading 17th goal of the season.
Dortmund move up to third place in the table as a result. However, RB Leipzig still hold an eight-point advantage in the table over their opponents.
