Hugo Lloris Signs New Contract With Tottenham

Hugo Lloris signs a new five-year contract with Tottenham Hotspur, contracting him till 2022. He cements his future at the club, a key player for Spurs.

Hugo Lloris has signed a new five-year contract with Tottenham Hotspur, keeping him with the club through 2022.

Champions League Contender

A key factor in any contract extension is the availability of European football. The club are still in the Europa League, which may give Lloris more European experience this year. However, it is quite likely that Michel Vorm may be starting these matches, depending on Mauricio Pochettino’s discretion.

Spurs may have dismally crashed out of the Champions League, but there is still hope of qualification for next season. The club are put in good stead with Jan Vertonghen, Eric Dier and Harry Kane all signing new contracts this year.

Lloris has made a wise decision to remain among his team-mates, forming a bond with the likes of Toby Alderweireld and Vertonghen. It is the relationships and strong communication between players that creates a winning squad. Arguably, Lloris could easily get a transfer to any top club in Europe, but it risks the potential spoils he would claim by staying at Spurs.

Euro 2016 finalist

Lloris has had a fantastic year, leading France into the Euro 2016 final this past summer. Unfortunately, he did not lift the trophy due to a super strike from Eder, but showed that he can compete at the highest of levels. His spectacular performances have inevitably attract interest from the likes of Real Madrid.

However, by staying with Tottenham, Lloris consolidates his career and his position in the France first team. France are not short of quality goalkeepers, take for example Steve Mandanda now at Crystal Palace. It is important to be playing first team football with the possibility of Mandanda replacing Lloris. At a new club, he might play second string to another goalkeeper.

Signing a new contract guarantees that Hugo Lloris has a starting place in the Tottenham line-up and a bright future ahead with Les Bleus.
