Milton Keynes Dons continued their abysmal form in EFL League One after conceding two late goals to Chesterfield on Tuesday.
MK Dons Continue Abysmal League Form
The visiting Spireites took the lead at Stadium MK courtesy of Jay O’Shea’s first half penalty. The Dons’ dominance of the game eventually told though.
Daniel Powell equalised on 67 minutes after powering through the Chesterfield defence and finishing past Ryan Fulton.
Just six minutes later, the Dons took the lead, something rarely seen at Stadium MK in recent times. Ryan Colclough’s deflected shot deceived Fulton to put the Dons in the driving seat.
The lead lasted just four minutes though, something that sums up the luck that the Dons are having this season. Kristian Dennis turned his effort past David Martin in the Dons’ goal to draw the bottom side level.
The embarrassment was confounded a further four minutes later. A good run and cross by Gboly Ariyibi was finished by Dan Gardner to put the visitors back in front.
The Spireites eventually held on for a win that sees them move off the bottom of the table. Shrewsbury Town replaced them following their 3-0 loss at Fleetwood.
What Is the Problem at Stadium MK?
The Dons are yet to win at home in the league this season and are win-less in the league since October 1st. Only an away win at Peterborough in the EFL Trophy and a narrow 3-2 win over Spennymoor Town in the FA Cup have prevented the Dons from further embarrassment.
Many fans are questioning whether sacking Karl Robinson was the right decision. Instead, they are laying the blame with chairman Pete Winkelman and his lack of spending. MK Dons have mostly relied on loans and free transfers for a number of seasons now, without spending huge amounts on top-quality players.
Another recent problem could be that the club are still yet to replace Karl Robinson. Robinson left his position on the 23rd of October, almost a month ago. Winkelman has revealed in numerous reports that over 200 people have expressed an interest in the job.
However, he also stated that none of these 200 had actually been interviewed.
A myriad of well-known managers have been linked with the job. Steve Evans, formerly of Leeds United, was considered but ended up joined Mansfield Town. Steve Cotterill is still in the running, and was present at MK Dons’ 0-0 stalemate with Bristol Rovers at the weekend.
Two high-profile names to be linked with the job were Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard. Lampard was quick to rule himself out, but reports suggested that talks were held between Winkelman and Gerrard. In the end though, the former Liverpool captain decided not to take the offer.
The Season Ahead
The Dons’ next game is a trip to Coventry City. This fixture is typically well-attended, especially by the Dons fans, who took nearly 2,000 fans to the match in 2014-15. The Dons will be hoping that their fairly respectable away form sees them take the three points in this game.
If they do not, then it sets them up badly for the showdown with their fierce rivals, AFC Wimbledon, on December 10th.
