MK Dons continued their dire home form on Saturday, with Southend United recording a 3-0 win at Stadium MK. Two goals from Antony Wordsworth and one from Simon Cox were enough for the Shrimpers to take all three points.
MK Dons: The Demise Continues
The Dons have been conceding early goals all season and did so yet again. After failing to clear a corner, Cox turned and fired across David Martin after just two minutes.
Things did improve slightly, and the Dons could have levelled were it not for the heroics of Mark Oxley. The Southend goalkeeper produced a brilliant double save to keep the Dons out, denying Darren Potter his first goal of the season on the second save.
However, after 25 minutes, things got much worse. An almost carbon copy of the first goal occurred, this time with Wordsworth finishing the move. The MK Dons fans behind the goal showed their frustrations, but this time with the players rather than with manager Karl Robinson.
In fact, Robinson actually made the right changes in this game, unlike midweek against Bristol Rovers. In the 68th minute, he brought on Ed Upson and Brandon Thomas-Asante in place of Jack Hendry and Daniel Powell. This allowed more players to go forward, and the young and eager Thomas-Asante to show his worth in place of an ineffective Powell.
Though it felt like the right changes, the two substitutes failed to really turn the fortunes of the game. In fact, in the 90th minute, major embarrassment ensued.
A mix-up at the back between goalkeeper Martin and Paul Downing gave Southend a free-kick. Martin then proceeded to push his own teammate in frustration, which is when the jeers started from the home crowd. Upon the push, choruses of “Time To Go” rang around Stadium MK, aimed at their under-fire manager. The chants got louder about five seconds later.
The resulting free-kick was beautifully curled in by Wordsworth to give Southend a comfortable 3-0 lead. This prompted many of the home faithful to give up and leave. It also prompted the main stand to continue their chants towards Robinson. Embarrassingly, it even prompted fighting amongst the home supporters.
All in all, it was another terrible day at the office for Karl Robinson and his side. They are still without a home win since March, and now sit 19th in the league table. It surely cannot be long now until Robinson is sacked, otherwise it will be League Two football for MK Dons next season.
