Indiana Hoosiers at Penn State Nittany Lions

The Indiana Hoosiers (14-12, 6-9 Big Ten) pay a visit to State College (PA) to face the Penn State Nittany Lions (13-14, 7-9) in a matchup between two teams that are in the bottom half of the Big Ten Conference.

Indiana is coming off an 85-70 loss at Nebraska on Wednesday. The Hoosiers have lost three straight overall and 3-7 in their last 10. The Hoosiers are 2-5 on the road with a -9.0 scoring margin.

Indiana’s three top players are all underclassmen, although the trio are very talented. Sophomore 7-0 center Ke’lel Ware, who produced his 11th double-double against Nebraska, leads the way with 15.2 points and 10.2 rebounds in conference play.

Sophomore forward Malik Reneau leads the team in scoring at 15.7 a game overall, while 6-8 freshman forward Mackenzie Mgbako has topped the 20-point plateau in each of the last two games.

Penn State is coming off a 90-89 come-from-behind victory to upset Illinois on Wednesday. The win over the Illini snapped a three-game losing streak for the Nittany Lions. The Lions have played well at home recently, winning three of their last five games at The Bryce Jordan Center, with victories over Wisconsin, Illinois, and Iowa.

PSU is 10-4 with a +10.0 scoring margin at home. The Nittany Lions have dismissed leading scorer Kanye Clary. But junior guard Ace Baldwin is averaging a career-high 13.7 points and is one of the preeminent perimeter defenders in college basketball.

Junior forward Zach Hicks has scored in double-figures in each of the last six games, producing 14.7 points a game during this stretch. Nicholas Kern has played well during Big Ten play at 10.6 points a game, and Qudus Wahab has been very efficient this season.

Prediction

Penn State has won three straight over Indiana and four of five. The Hoosiers last won at Penn State in 2018. While the Hoosiers have an edge up front, the Nittany Lions have a massive advantage in the backcourt.

 Pick: Penn State (-178)

Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Syracuse Orange

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish (10-16, 5-10 ACC) faces the Syracuse Orange (17-10, 8-8) at JMA Wireless Dome.

Notre Dame is a very young team; their top 7 players are underclassmen. The Fighting Irish have won three straight, topping Louisville 72-50 the last time out on Wednesday.

Freshmen guards Markus Burton and Braeden Shrewdsberry lead the way for the Irish. Burton tops the team at 16.2 points a game, as he has scored at least that many in each of the last six games and 19 straight occassions overall.

Meanwhile, Shrewsberry has stepped up his production over the last 12 games, scoring double-digits on nine occassions. Shrewsberry also has canned at least four three-pointers in four of the previous seven games.

Syracuse is also a young team; they have no seniors on their roster. The Orange have alternated wins and losses in each of their last six games and are 5-5 in their previous 10. The Orange are 12-2 at home this season, which includes a monumental upset victory over UNC on Feb. 13.

SU has five players averaging double-figures in ACC play, led by sophomore guard Judiah Mintz. Mintz surpassed the 1,000-point mark as he finished with 15 points in the victory over NC State the last time out. JJ Starling, Chris Bell, Qadir Copeland, and Maliq Brown also average double-figures in conference play.

Prediction

Syracuse is the more talented team and should extend their series win streak to three straight as the Orange honor former head coach Jim Boeheim. However, the Orange are just 10-16 ATS this year, including 6-8 at home.

Moreover, Notre Dame is playing their best basketball of the season. The Fighting Irish are 6-3 ATS in true road games and 10-8 ATS as an underdog this year.

With no value in taking the Orange on the money line unless using them in a parlay, take Notre Dame to cover.

Pick: Notre Dame (+5.5)
