Australian Open odds: Frances Tiafoe vs. Juncheng Shang

Tiafoe’s first-round match vs. 91-ranked Daniel Altmaier was more of a struggle than he would have liked. But in the end, the 24-year-old prevailed in four sets in a match that lasted just over three hours.

Tiafoe burst onto the scene in 2019 at the Australian Open, reaching his first Grand Slam quarterfinals and putting his name on the map. His sights are set higher this year as he eyes his first major after making it all the way to the semis at the US Open last September.

Round 2 will be no layup for Tiafoe, with qualifier and ITF junior star Juncheng Shang standing in his way. Shang made a splash in Round 1 by upsetting Germany’s Oscar Otte in four sets. The 17-year-old is the youngest male in this year’s tournament and is the first Chinese male to win a match at the AO in the Open Era.

Shang has a 27-12 record on the hard court in his young career, while Tiafoe is 145-104. This will be the first match between the two.
