The Los Angeles Lakers have been without forward Jarred Vanderbilt for quite some time. Vanderbilt suited up for just 29 games last year. Due to lingering foot injuries throughout the season, it further escalated in February playing against the Boston Celtics. Vanderbilt was ruled out of this game at halftime due to a right midfoot sprain. There was uncertainty but definitely a belief that he was going to make it back in time come playoffs this past postseason. Unfortunately, he did not play a single game and is questionable to play come opening night in a few weeks.
During this offseason, Vanderbilt underwent surgery on both his feet and has been rehabbing since. Everything is headed in the right direction for Vanderbilt getting back on the floor for the purple and gold.
Lakers News: Jarred Vanderbilt Injury Rehab in the Right Direction
Vanderbilt is entering his second full season with the Lakers. He was originally traded to the Lakers in Feb. 2023 as part of a three-team trade. After a successful trade deadline outcome, the 2023-2024 season wasn’t what Vanderbilt was planning for. However, he is looking forward to a healthier, bounce back year ahead.
Lakers Media Day Report
During Lakers Media Day, when asked on his current health status heading into the new season, Vanderbilt responded with reassurance that things are going well.
“I feel great. The process has been going great. Everything has been on a great pace and great scheduling. Everything feels good.” per The Athletic’s Jovan Buha.
That is the best news for Lakers fans heading into the 2024-2025 season. The Lakers missed a few important pieces to the team throughout the season and playoffs due to injuries. Getting Vanderbilt, Christian Wood, and Gabe Vincent back in full strength is going to be impactful for this team moving forward. Although, there is still no time frame as to when Vando will return, there is optimism that Vanderbilt could be back for the season opener against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Lakers General Manager Rob Pelinka said last week that both of Vanderbilt’s procedures went successfully and that there was “optimism” he will be available for the opener.
Pelinka said that Jarred Vanderbilt had a procedure on each foot after last season, and they were “highly successful.” He’s on a return-to-play protocol. Pelinka shared optimism that when the regular season starts, he'll be available, though there will be ramp-up steps that need…

Vanderbilt’s Impact & Last Word
When Vanderbilt was available to play for the Lakers last season, he averaged 5.2 points, 4.8 assists, and 1.2 assists per game while averaging 20 minutes per game. Under head coach JJ Redick and his staff, they have insisted on wanting to get more dominant defensively and implement more size. This will impact the rise to Vanderbilt’s usage this coming season.
The Lakers are looking to have Vanderbilt for the majority of the upcoming season. Although his numbers say otherwise, Vanderbilt’s defensive contributions are key for this Lakers team. He was a big puzzle piece for the Lakers’ run to the Western Conference Finals in the 2023 playoffs. His defensive skills, versatility on both ends of the floor, and energy is something the purple and gold are looking forward to getting back.
