In a recent report, the St. John’s Red Storm and other teams look to finalize a deal to play in Arther Ashe Stadium for the 2024-2025 season. Teams include St. John’s, Duke, Alabama, and others.

St. John’s Red Storm to Play at Arther Ashe?

How Does This Work?

The deal is in the works, according to Red Storm coach Rick Pitino. Basketball only happened once in the stadium, a 2008 WNBA game. Pitino explained how the deal looks “more positive than negative.” More specifically, Duke is another team interested in this potential opportunity.

The proposed tournament is a showcase event in an arena known for the U.S. Open. While nothing is set in stone yet, Pitino’s confidence makes the idea realistic.

This deal has not gone through due to the limited basketball events at Arther Ashe.

What Does This Mean for the Red Storm?

In terms of the meaning of this event for St. John’s, it is a chance to make an impact. Many see New York as the Mecca of basketball, and adding another big college basketball event to a famous venue helps that image. The Red Storm attracts more fans to their team as well.

It also brings more fierce competition. St. John’s wants to establish a good non-conference schedule, and adding teams like Duke and Alabama helps them out. Pitino explained that the Red Storm’s non-conference schedule is going to be “the best in St. John’s history”. He further emphasized that it “takes a year” to establish a schedule like that. They have talks with Alabama already in regards to playing at Madison Square Garden, but Arther Ashe is another great venue.

St. John’s looks to rebuild its brand as one of the best teams in the country. Therefore, they have to beat the best teams in the country. Pitino looks for a challenge, and these tournaments give the Red Storm great opportunities.

The Last Word on St. John’s

While the deal needs to cross the finish line, the St. John’s Red Storm push for relevancy and to build excitement again for NYC basketball. People need to find excitement around the Big East, as this season and the future are looking very bright.
