With NBA free agency starting to wrap up there are a few quality players that have yet to be signed. One of the biggest names in this bunch is Collin Sexton of the Cleveland Cavaliers. With multiple teams in need of his skill set, here are a few teams that should take a second look at him.
The Collin Sexton Sweepstakes
Dallas Mavericks
The Dallas Mavericks recently lost their second-best scorer in Jalen Brunson. Luka Dončić has shown he can carry a team on his own, but a second option that can score at ease would help. Insert Sexton. Sexton, when healthy, put up 24.3 points and 4.4 assists. Brunson this last year put up 16.3 points and 4.8 assists. Sexton can take over the role of a secondary ball-handler while still getting his shots.
Dallas should look to retain cap flexibility in the future in order to remain competitive. Signing Sexton to a short-term prove-it deal will allow them to do this. On top of that, Sexton will be able to lead a bench unit that has little ball creation on it. With both Spencer Dinwiddie and Luka starting at guards, Sexton can be a glorified sixth man that’ll put up necessary numbers to lead to wins.
Minnesota Timberwolves
The Minnesota Timberwolves have little to no cap space after the Rudy Gobert trade. If no one offers Sexton an offer though it’ll be worth their while to offer him a one-year deal. The Wolves recently lost their bench scoring in Malik Beasley after trading him to Utah. Sexton could be a great scorer off the bench for a team that hopes to contend.
With a player like Gobert, any perimeter scoring is beneficial. Minnesota has decent scoring off the bench with Jaylen Nowell and Jordan McLaughlin, but these players have less potential than Sexton. Sexton is a better perimeter shooter and can get his player involved better. D’Angelo Russell has shown that using his energy as a playmaker and defender instead of as a scorer can lead to a lot of wins for a team. Adding another scorer in Sexton will just add to this already decent Minnesota roster.
Milwaukee Bucks
With this team being two years removed from a championship, they need retooling if they hope to win it all. They have an amazing defense with Giannis Antetokounmpo and Jrue Holiday being All-NBA defenders. Both Giannis and Khris Middleton can get their own buckets, but having a guard that can create his own shot is crucial to this team. That’s where Sexton can help.
Sexton is a very efficient scorer shooting 47.5% from the field and 37.1% from three when he was last healthy. Adding this to Milwaukee who was already the sixth most efficient offense takes this team to another level. Sexton would also be a great player alongside Giannis as he shot 40.3% on catch and shoot that year.
Phoenix Suns
The Suns have recently been a part of the Kevin Durant bidding war. If they don’t get him they need to find another scorer to add to this team. One of their biggest struggles this last playoffs was their ability to score. They had a severe lack of guard play as well as a Devin Booker injury they had to deal with. Adding Sexton will give this team a sense of security at the guard position.
In his last healthy season, 25.5% of his shots were taken off zero dribbles in which he had an EFG of 63%. This shows he can play effectively alongside Chris Paul and Devin Booker, both of whom are ball dominant. He can also take over when none of them are on the court as he’s proven himself as a number one option. This is the perfect low-risk high-reward move for Phoenix to make to instantly shoot back to contention.
