NBA free agency has definitely slowed down compared to the first couple of days. Plenty of top players switched sides, role players found new homes, and trades and extensions were made. With that being said, there’s still a list of talented players available, especially long-tenured veterans who may sign on the low.
NBA Free Agency: Low Cost Veterans Still Available
Backcourt
Two veterans who can jump in and immediately help title contenders are JJ Redick and Avery Bradley.
Redick spent time with the New Orleans Pelicans and Dallas Mavericks last season. His Mavericks tenure was short, as he dealt with injuries and missed the entire playoffs. With that being said, he remains a vocal leader and three-point sniper. Redick is one of the top catch-and-shoot players in the league. He’s definitely worth a flyer and around 10 minutes on the court per game. The Brooklyn Nets and Utah Jazz should be keeping tabs on him. Brooklyn is home away from home for Redick, and the star-studded team can always use another shooter. The Jazz, already an elite shooting team, can add to their guard depth as well.
Bradley is a defensive-minded player who can shoot the lights out when hot as well. Last season was a blimp for him, spending time on the rebuilding Houston Rockets. He’s only 30-years-old, and can still play meaningful minutes. The Los Angeles Clippers and New York Knicks should keep an eye out. The Clippers can use reinforcements with Kawhi Leonard out for a while. New York already has a very solid crop of guards, but Bradley is an ideal fit for a Tom Thibodeau team and can find a way into the rotation.
Frontcourt
The big name left on the board here is Lauri Markkanen. Looking away from that, however, three available low-cost veterans available in NBA free agency still are Paul Millsap, Bismack Biyombo, and DeMarcus Cousins.
Millsap is up there in age, but can still bring a spark of toughness off the bench, as seen with the Denver Nuggets. The Boston Celtics can definitely use frontcourt help this season, making Millsap ideal. He would also serve as a fantastic backup and mentor for Zion Williamson on the New Orleans Pelicans.
The high-flying blocker and dunker Biyombo still deserves a spot. His offensive game is limited, but he brings tenacity on the defensive end. He can find a rotation spot for the Chicago Bulls and the Washington Wizards.
Lastly, of course, there’s Cousins. He once had an extremely promising career, fighting towards the claim of being the best center in the league. Injuries have altered that, but he showed solid flashes with the Clippers last year. The Atlanta Hawks could use him after the injury to Onyeka Okongwu.
