Impact Scoring
The Lakers are getting a real impact scorer here. Whether he starts or comes off the bench is still unclear, but Monk will flourish in either of those roles.
Last season he averaged about 12 points per game in 21 minutes on the floor. What’s most impressive about this is that he shot 40 percent from three, which was a massive uptick from his previous seasons. His total shooting split was 43/40/82, showing that he’s a bucket-getter.
Monk also played in a jammed guard rotation last season. That won’t be as much of the case with the Lakers. After letting go of Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Alex Caruso, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Monk start in the backcourt alongside Russell Westbrook.
It remains to be seen what the Lakers offense is going to look like. Westbrook and LeBron James will start, making it interesting to see which ball-dominant player will be running plays, making passes, driving to the rim, and so on. With that being said, those two stars, and throwing in Anthony Davis into the mix, will create a ton of space for Monk.
The Lakers get their sharpshooter here. Trends indicate that Monk will keep it going too. Not only do the Lakers have Monk, but Wayne Ellington as well. Their strategy is clear – surround the three superstars with niche players.
