The Washington Wizards drastically altered the course of their rebuild this past season, trading for four-time NBA All-Star Trae Young and 10-time NBA All-Star Anthony Davis just over a month apart. Not only did the Wizards send the NBA world into a frenzy, but they also altered the course of the franchise’s future. They’ve kick-started what could be a new dawn in D.C with real postseason potential written all over it. While it’s not a championship-caliber roster, there is a window for real success for the first time in half a decade.
Now heading into one of the most critical periods of their entire rebuild, the 2026 NBA Draft. With the first overall pick, the Wizards could add yet another young prospect with real superstar-level potential. However, Washington hasn’t signaled a clear strategy yet; even considering trading the pick. Why are they holding out? It could be in efforts to create another splash in the trade world, as Giannis Antetokounmpo may once again be on the trade market.
Wizards Could Shock the NBA Again With Blockbuster Trade Rumor
It’s no secret that the Milwaukee Bucks have handled every major, franchise-defining decision the last few years incorrectly.
The front office swapped franchise legend Khris Middleton for Kyle Kuzma, who is now considered untouchable, but for the wrong reasons. The team cut Damian Lillard and will be paying him over 20 million dollars every year through 2030. Then, right after the regular season, their head coach, Doc Rivers, told his players to “Google Me” before retiring after finishing his stint in Milwaukee with a 97-103 record.
All of these decisions have left the team directionless. It’s time for a fresh start, Milwaukee, and Antetokounmpo needs to get out before going down with the ship. What’s this got to do with Washington? According to ESPN’s Marc Spears, the Wizards could be looking to move on the two-time NBA MVP if the opportunity presents itself. Here’s what Spears had to say about Antetokounmpo’s market on 95.7 The Game:
“I basically was told, by a very good source close to that Washington situation, that they’re going to explore their options. I think that with some of the young talent that they have, why not right? The one thing I wonder with Giannis is how much power does he have in where they trade him, and does this relatively new owner there really care? Does he have a relationship with Giannis where he’s worried about his destination?”
Another Potential Blockbuster
A star of Antetokounmpo’s level will no doubt garner the NBA blockbuster title. However, it’s become a common theme throughout the last few years. Besides Washington’s two during the regular season, the league has seen plenty of stars moving around over the last few years.
Lillard was a staple with the Portland Trail Blazers and became a true “tier one” NBA star before being sent out to Milwaukee. Luka Doncic was traded for Davis just last season, shifting the Los Angeles Lakers from a LeBron James-focused core to finding a future after he retires. Jimmy Butler was sent to the Golden State Warriors after months of conflict with the Miami Heat. Other big names like James Harden and Kevin Durant have also seen multiple moves in the last few seasons, even if it wasn’t in the franchise’s greatest interests.
With the Bucks’ current situation and the explosion of trade rumors at the deadline this season, who’s to say they won’t tear it all down? If they decide to do so, Washington holds cards that Milwaukee could certainly use to jumpstart its rebuild, while the Wizards would extend their championship window.
Washington’s Potential Package
Washington was able to keep a majority of draft capital and young pieces even through the two All-Star acquisitions. That would not be the case for a player of Antetokounmpo’s talent. A top-three player in the league and an MVP favorite when healthy, the Wizards would need to offer a heavy package of picks, while also giving Milwaukee a few pieces to support the franchise through the next few grueling seasons.
With that being said, Davis is certainly on the board. Washington shouldn’t hesitate to trade the 2020 champion; he’s injury-prone and has openly commented about how he wants to be competing for a title as his career winds down. A package built around the big man would be a must. Davis’ contract also provides the Bucks with flexibility, as he has a player option for the 2027-28 season.
Davis doesn’t want to play on a rebuilding roster, but he also has to prove to general managers around the league that he can stay healthy. Being the first option on a rebuilding roster can allow him to prove he can still play at an elite level while avoiding another injury bug.
As mentioned, draft capital is a must as well. As things stand, Washington owns complete control over the 2026 NBA Draft’s talent pool and could entice the Bucks with the first pick, Davis and a young prospect like Bub Carrington, Cam Whitmore or Will Riley. Additionally, Washington holds nearly 20 picks in the future, with eight of them being first-round picks.
The Last Word
At the end of the day, NBA trade rumors are just rumors. In that same breath, the Wizards could extend their championship window another two to four years if they can land the 2021 NBA champion. For the Bucks, it’s time to tear it down, and unfortunately, their franchise face doesn’t have the years left to stick around for another full-scale rebuild.
Not only do you send him to Washington, where he’ll have the opportunity to lead a young core of limitless potential, but in return, you get another fresh start. The 2026 NBA Draft could hand you another star, and who knows, they could become your next franchise legend. You add that on top of Davis’ expiring contract and the mountain of picks Washington could offer, and the Bucks could be back to contention in no time if they finally do things the right way.
